You have arrived at the Official J.T. Cross Website. I love writing thriller and speculative fiction adventure stories. Sometimes folks refer to these genres as pure escapism. Well maybe, but you can also think of it as an inexpensive form of stress reduction therapy. After a hard day’s work, a thrilling novel along with a snack just seems to make everything all better. But there’s more to good speculative fiction and adventure/thriller novels than that.
These genres provide a chance for authors to explore areas that are not fully understood by today’s scientists, and there are a lot of them. For instance, the Standard Model, physic’s mathematical description of the behavior of the tiny atomic particles that make up everything in our reality, does an excellent job and is a remarkable achievement. Yet, no one knows why subatomic particles behave as the model predicts, or even why particles exist. Additionally, the Standard Model is not compatible with Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. When attempts are made to combine them, the mathematics seem to fall apart, producing nonsensical solutions.
And then there is genetic engineering, a science that is still in it’s infancy because no one knows how the human genome works to build and control the operation of complex organisms. It’s almost an infinitely complex study. However, someday when the science is mature, it will have the ability to cure every disease. Taken even farther, it will give mankind the ability to re-engineer himself. That’s a big claim and a scary thought, but certainly possible with enough knowledge of chemistry, biological systems, nanotechnology, and extensive computing power.
And then there is energy production. Our current technologies are all pretty much just improvements on methods invented in the 19th century, except for nuclear and solar cell technologies, which have issues of their own. Our current large scale sources of energy are hard on earth’s resources and environment. So where do we go from here? Fusion and super-conductor technologies or space-based solar would seem a good bet, but we are a long way from anything useful in those areas. It’s seems like it’s going to require a quantum leap in our understanding and inventiveness to get there. I think I feel a story coming on…
I bring all this up to say that there are big holes in our understanding. It’s these gray areas that leave plenty of room for authors to let their imaginations run wild.
